Dehydroepiandrosterone, also known as androstenolone or prasterone as well as 3β-hydroxyandrost-5-en-17-one or 5-androsten-3β-ol-17-one, is an important endogenous steroid hormone, neurosteroid, and androgen, less potent than testosterone, but with similar physiological effects. In addition to being an androgen in its own right, DHEA functions as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of androstenedione and androstenediol from 17-hydroxypregnenolone, which in turn are precursors to the more potent androgens, testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, and the estrogens, estradiol, estrone, and estriol. It is the most abundant circulating steroid in humans, in which it is produced in the adrenal glands, the gonads, and the brain, and has been implicated in a broad range of biological effects in humans and other mammals.
