A galaxy is any of numerous massive systems consisting of stars, stellar remnants and an interstellar medium of gas and dust bound together by gravitation. Galaxies are also thought to be made up of an important but poorly understood component known as dark matter, which would account for a large part of their total masses. The word galaxy is derived from the Greek galaxias, literally "milky", a reference to the Milky Way galaxy.
