civil marriages are recognized by the law and all its proceedings fall under local
state legislation.
Same-sex marriages are legally performed in
Mexico City, and
same-sex civil unions are legally performed in Mexico City and the northern state of
Coahuila, whose legal residents constitute 10.31% of the national population approximately.
Same-sex marriages in Mexico City and
same-sex civil unions in Coahuila have protected rights throughout the entire country. Same-sex marriages have also been performed in certain
municipalities in the state of
Quintana Roo, but their legality is under review by the Secretary of State of Quintana Roo and further same-sex marriages were suspended.
