Government Makes Third Tax Policy U-turn In A Week
yahoo.com 21 hours, 19 minutes agoLONDON (Reuters) - The centre-right coalition dropped plans to tax charity donations on Thursday, in the third U-turn this week on budget proposals which have hurt its poll ratings and drawn accusations from opponents that it is out of touch with ordinary people. Thursday's reversal follows retreats on levies on hot takeaway food - the "pasty tax" - and caravan homes, and piles pressure on a government already reeling from a phone-hacking scandal which has exposed close links between media and politicians.

yahoo.com 3 days, 5 hours agoLONDON (Reuters) - The government is to modify VAT on hot takeaway food after months of criticism that its planned "pasty tax" showed it was out of touch with ordinary people. A Treasury spokeswoman said that Value Added Tax (VAT) would not be applied to hot takeaway food that is cooling down after being cooked - for example the popular Cornish pasties which shops rarely sell straight from the oven. ...
