Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik is the current
President of the Maldives. He was sworn into office on 7 February 2012 upon the resignation of President
Mohamed Nasheed.
He is the only president of the
Maldives to not have been elected. He served as the first ever democratically elected
Vice President of the Maldives, serving under Nasheed from 2008 till 2012. Before returning to the
Maldives in 2005, he served as the Associate Director of the
UNDCO at the
United Nations Headquarters in
New York,
USA, the most recent of many offices that Waheed had previously served in both the
United Nations and
UNICEF. His work with
UNDP and
UNESCO included working as a freelance consultant in developing educational programmes for
Swaziland,
Lesotho,
Mozambique,
Tanzania,
Bangladesh and the South Pacific Islands.
